What Does "3-in-1" Really Mean on a Montessori Learning Tower?

Learning Towers4 min read · August 2026

"3-in-1" on a learning tower means one piece of furniture doing three things for a toddler: a kitchen tower at bench height, a table and chair set for meals and play, and a chalkboard offered once an adult turns the whole tower around. On the Fox and Bunny Learning Tower, the tower and the table-and-chair set are two shapes of the same frame, while the chalkboard is a third use that needs an adult to turn the tower first, not something a toddler reaches alone. The frame does not fold flat for storage, and a learning tower is not the only way to reach bench height, so which one fits depends on the family.

What "3-in-1" Means on a Learning Tower

Our product pages describe the three as: a kitchen tower, a table and chair set, and a chalkboard. All three come from a single frame: it stands as a tower, it converts into a table and chair set, and it offers a chalkboard once an adult turns the whole tower around.

Letting a toddler stand at bench height and take part in real kitchen work is a real, useful job at the child's own scale. This is the idea behind the practical life activities in Montessori education.

The Three Uses on a Fox and Bunny Learning Tower

Tower mode has measurements published, table-and-chair mode reshapes the same frame, and the chalkboard reveals a side of it once an adult turns the tower around. We have not published measurements for the table-and-chair or chalkboard states, only for tower mode.

In tower mode the frame stands 86 cm / 33.8 in tall, 40 cm / 15.7 in wide and 36 cm / 14.2 in deep, which puts a toddler at kitchen-bench height to help with cooking or washing up; the whole tower weighs 7.6 kg / 16.7 lbs. In table and chair mode the same frame is a seat and a low surface for meals and craft. The chalkboard is on the side of the frame that faces inward, toward the wall or cabinet, while the tower is in use at the bench.

A written step-by-step sequence for moving between tower mode and table-and-chair mode is not yet published on our site.

One Fox & Bunny owner described tower mode in a Judge.me review: "My little one loves it, and it's made a huge difference to our time in the kitchen together (I'm no longer doing everything one handed!)".

Can Your Toddler Use the Chalkboard While Standing on the Tower?

No. The chalkboard faces inward while the tower is at the bench. To use it, your toddler steps down, then an adult turns the whole tower around so the chalkboard side faces out. An adult always does the turning, with no lock or tool involved.

An adult has already turned the whole tower around to show the chalkboard.

Switching between tower mode and table-and-chair mode takes about 3 seconds. We have not measured or published a time for an adult turning the tower around for the chalkboard.

The frame has two physical configurations, tower and table-and-chair, and moves between them. Turning the whole tower around for the chalkboard happens from tower mode, using that same frame. That leaves one more question: whether the tower folds away for storage.

Does a 3-in-1 Learning Tower Fold Flat?

Ours does not. Once the Fox and Bunny Learning Tower is built, the frame converts between tower mode and table-and-chair mode, and an adult can turn the whole tower around for the chalkboard. Storage stays as one of those two shapes. Our product pages say plainly that fold-flat hinges create pinch hazards and reduce stability. The load we state for the frame is 75 kg / 165 lbs.

If you need the tower to disappear into a cupboard between uses, check that before ordering: ours stays as a tower or a table and chair.

Assembly is a different step from converting or turning. Our product page puts the initial build at 10 to 20 minutes, and our Bunny assembly guide and Fox assembly guide go through it page by page.

Is a 3-in-1 Learning Tower Right for Your Family?

A 3-in-1 learning tower earns its place if you want one piece of furniture that supports a toddler in the kitchen now and is still being used at table height later. Bench-height reach on its own can come from a plain step stool instead: our guide to choosing the right toddler step stool puts that at around three years and up, and points back to a learning tower for a younger child or one who needs more support around them.

Both Fox and Bunny are listed "for ages 1+", always with adult supervision. That badge is about the furniture. Which jobs suit a child at a given age is a separate question: everyday chores build independence, and tasks sort by age and ability, with kitchen work sitting further up that range and still needing an adult alongside, according to Raising Children Network.
